What can you do at Lake Balaton in winter? Well, not too much

But there is at least a reasonable choice.

As a Hungarian, I have been visiting Balaton for decades. During communism, traveling abroad was extremely difficult, so this lake was the most popular choice for domestic holidaymakers. As a child I used to go there every summer with my family.

After the political system changed, Hungarians flocked to the shores of European countries like Croatia, Italy, Greece or Spain, and Balaton lost its charm, but only temporarily.

Because it is close, relatively cheap and the shallow water is perfect for families, it became popular and  was discovered again. The infrastructure improved, new hotels were built, and fancy restaurants and bars opened.

But the old question remained:

What can you do at Lake Balaton in winter?

And be prepared that nobody will admit that there is not much to do.

But it is true. And it is partly true for spring and autumn too.

The lake is beautiful in all seasons, but if you can’t swim in the water or sunbathe on the beach, your options are limited.

And that goes for rainy or cooler summer days, which are not impossible here as the climate is continental rather than Mediterranean.

According to the guidebooks and travel agencies, there are lots of things to do, visiting museums, old castles, hiking along the coast or in the neighboring hills, taking picturesque photos, but believe me, you will get bored after a few days.

My experience is that there is one sensible choice in the off-season: choose a decent “wellness hotel” near the lake, with pools, spas and other amenities. Around Christmas, Easter or during the summer season they are quite expensive, but in late autumn, late winter or early spring you can book rooms at a relatively cheap price, including half board.

This type of accommodation can serve as a base for cultural activities, hiking, photography or culinary adventures.

I am writing this article because I have just tried this option, not the first and last time.
