Retro Balaton Exhibition to Open in Keszthely with Outdoor Car Show

The program may be of particular interest to German tourists.

A new exhibition celebrating the atmosphere of past decades at Lake Balaton will open in June at the Balaton Museum in Keszthely. The program will also feature an outdoor classic car display, making it especially appealing for visitors interested in vintage vehicles.

Lake Lake Balaton has always played a central role in Hungarian life, particularly during the socialist era, when foreign travel was limited or not possible at all. The exhibition aims to evoke this period, which the museum described at a recent press conference as “the biggest attraction of the year.”

Visitors will be able to explore the beach culture, hospitality venues, and discos of the era. The museum garden is set to host vehicles from the former Eastern Bloc, while open-air screenings will recreate the atmosphere of former garden cinemas and drive-in movie theaters using films from the period.

The exhibition is expected to be of interest not only to Hungarian visitors but also to foreign tourists—especially those from Germany. During the Cold War years, Lake Balaton served as a unique meeting place for both East and West German holidaymakers.

The museum is currently collecting items for the exhibition, including objects, photographs, tape recorders, cassettes, records, posters, tickets, newspapers, clothing, and other memorabilia from the era.

According to plans, the “Retro Balaton” exhibition will be open to the public for approximately one year.
