This is Romania’s first airport built after the 1989.
The international airport of Brașov–Ghimbav, which opened in 2023, continues to grow in popularity. From March 31, Wizz Air will operate daily flights between Brașov and Budapest, the airport announced on Monday.
In a post on its Facebook page, the airport — which also serves the Transylvanian (Székely Land) region — said that the low-cost airline will increase the frequency of the route from the current four weekly flights to daily service.
Wizz Air launched the Budapest–Brașov route on July 2, 2024, and it quickly became one of the most popular connections at the Transylvanian airport. From October last year, the airline increased the frequency from three to four flights per week in response to strong demand.
The southern Transylvanian airport also announced that from January 28 it will operate flights to Rome three times a week. In addition, from June 1 the Brașov–Nuremberg route will be expanded to six weekly flights.
At the beginning of January, Adrian Vestea, president of the Brașov County Council — which operates the airport — announced that passenger traffic in 2025 increased by 48 percent compared to the previous year, with a total of 337,353 passengers recorded. He emphasized that operators are entering 2026 with optimism, as the airport has lived up to expectations: passenger numbers continue to rise and further expansion is underway.
Brașov–Ghimbav International Airport opened in June 2023 as Romania’s first airport built after the 1989 political transition as a greenfield investment. Its construction was also supported by local governments in Transylvania, highlighting its role in connecting the predominantly Hungarian-speaking region to international air travel. In the medium term, operators expect annual passenger numbers to reach one million.
