The star’s US bank flagged the suspicious activity after noticing irregularities.
A fraudster living in Budapest obtained Johnny Depp’s banking details and spent a total of $720,000 from his account over two years without the movie star ever realizing it, according to the tabloid Blikk.

The Investigation
The case began early this year when a US financial institution filed a report through the FBI’s Hungarian office. They had detected illegal withdrawals from a high-profile client’s account, with the trail leading directly to Hungary.
Bank records reveal that the fraud took place between January 2024 and December 2025. Using Depp’s credit card data, the perpetrator attempted 308 fraudulent online transactions totaling $721,415. These included various purchases and service bookings, most of which were made through an international travel and accommodation website.
The Arrest
Hungarian police eventually tracked down the suspect, a 27-year-old Jordanian national living in Budapest. During a search of his rented apartment, authorities seized electronic devices used to commit the fraud, as well as suspected drug residue. The man has since been interrogated as a suspect.
According to Blikk, the actor was using an American Express card, the data for which was compromised sometime before January 2024. While the investigation continues to determine exactly how the data was stolen, it is confirmed that the actor was completely unaware that the funds were missing.
Related Incidents
Notably, this isn’t the only crime involving Depp’s circle in the capital. In 2023, a burglar broke into the Budapest home of French actress Antonia Desplat—who appears in Depp’s current project—stealing valuables worth nearly 5 million HUF.
Johnny Depp is a frequent visitor to Budapest for work. Last September, he filmed scenes for the movie Modi, and he previously stayed in the city in 2022 for a French film production.
