The Most Spectacular Northern Lights of the Century Over Hungary

Accompanied by snow and biting frost, it felt as if we were standing in the Arctic.

For the first time since October 2003, a geomagnetic storm of exceptional strength reached Earth on the evening of January 19. As a result, the Aurora Borealis lit up the skies over Hungary with unprecedented intensity.

The phenomenon was at its most spectacular between 10 p.m. and midnight, followed by a second, weaker wave in the early morning hours.

The Arctic-like atmosphere was further enhanced by the snowfall of recent days and the severe nighttime frost.

The Aurora Borealis was captured by several photographers, including those working for MTI.
