Unlike in many other countries, taking buses in Hungary is not cheaper than taking trains.
The other day, I came across this map on the website of the Hungarian state-owned public transport company, MÁV, which I think could be of interest to anyone visiting or living in the country.
It shows all the domestic bus lines that reach Budapest.
The colour of the lines is insignificant, except for the grey ones, which indicate multiple lines combined. The numbers help you to find the lines in the timetable. In any case, unlike in many other countries, travelling by long-distance bus is neither cheaper nor faster than travelling by train, so in most cases I would recommend the latter.
This map is useful, but remember that it shows only the bus lines connected to Budapest, while an endless number of buses run between smaller towns in the countryside.
You can find these maps here. However, if you want to plan a journey in the countryside, it is better to use the MÁV journey planner, Menetrendek.hu or Google.
