The Auchan stores in Hungary have come under Hungarian ownership, and hundreds more may open in the future

One of the country’s wealthiest businessmen has acquired ownership of the chain.

In a significant move for the domestic retail sector, the Indotek Group has purchased the remaining 53% stake in Auchan Magyarország Kft. from Auchan Retail International (ARI), MTI reports. This acquisition makes the Hungarian company the sole owner of both the retail chain’s operations and its real estate assets. The purchase was financed through Indotek’s own resources, and the parties involved have agreed not to disclose the transaction value.

Strategy and Growth

Despite the change in ownership, the Indotek Group has confirmed that the company’s corporate strategy and management team will remain unchanged. Since taking control of management alongside the acquisition of a 47% stake in late 2024, Indotek has reportedly improved the firm’s operational performance and profitability while strengthening its supplier relations.

Looking ahead, Auchan Hungary plans to enter the market with smaller-format stores. The company’s expansion strategy includes opening hundreds of new units across the country in the coming years.

A Pillar of Hungarian Retail

Since its arrival in 1998, Auchan Magyarország Kft. has become a cornerstone of the Hungarian retail sector. Its current footprint includes:

  • 19 hypermarkets and 2 superstores
  • 3 supermarkets
  • 19 gas stations
  • A nationwide online shopping platform
  • An “AuchanGO” automated innovation pilot project

The chain employs approximately 5,400 people in Hungary, and its 2025 revenue reached 500 billion HUF.

About the Indotek Group

Headquartered in Budapest, the Indotek Group is an international investment firm with a presence in 12 countries. The group manages assets valued at approximately 2.5 billion euros across Europe, with a portfolio of over 350 properties spanning 2.5 million square meters, including retail, office, industrial-logistics, hotel, and residential properties. Beyond real estate, the firm is active in managing non-performing loan portfolios and private equity investments.

Dániel Jellinek

The majority owner of Indotek is Dániel Jellinek, estimated to be the 7th wealthiest person in Hungary with a net worth of 355 billion HUF. Jellinek is known for operating quietly in the background; while he is not typically categorized as a member of the inner circle of Orbán-government oligarchs, he is not independent of them, as his investments are frequently associated with state-owned or government-affiliated corporate partners.
