Hungary will hold parliamentary elections on April 12, a vote that could determine whether Viktor Orbán remains in power—continuing the country’s current political direction—or whether a new era is coming with Péter Magyar and the Tisza Party. Regardless of the outcome, the election is widely seen as a milestone for the country’s future.
Polls currently suggest an advantage for Péter Magyar, although past elections have shown that Orbán is often underestimated. What is clear, however, is that the long-serving prime minister—who has been in power for 16 years—is deeply unpopular among younger voters and residents of Budapest.
It is sure that a large turnout is expected at the April 10 “system-breaking mega concert,” organized by the civil group Polgári Ellenállás (Civil Resistance). The event in Heroes’ Square (Hősök tere) will feature more than 40 Hungarian bands and artists representing a wide range of generations and musical styles.
Each performer will play a single, system-critical song, but the event is still expected to last around six hours. Many of the musicians—some of them major stars—have agreed to perform for free, while the event itself is funded through donations.
According to the organizers, the goal is to mobilize politically less active citizens ahead of the election and encourage them to vote.
“Vote on Sunday so that from Monday we can dismantle the feudal system, free our country from Russia’s alliance, and build a free and Western-oriented Hungary together,” reads the event’s Facebook page.
The concert promises not only to be a politically charged gathering but also a unique cultural experience, offering a deep dive into Hungary’s contemporary music scene and the chance to witness what could be a historic moment.
